According to this article, and I tend to agree, we are finally beginning to turn to a more European way of using government to protect our society. Once a universal health care system kicks in, we'll actually be on that road and not just idling on the on-ramp. In essence, the GOP "fear the socialsts" meme is already dead. And they helped move it along.
