As jobs vanish, motel rooms become home for some - International Herald Tribune

This is what our country is coming to. We've got families living in motels. Driven out of their homes they are trying to hold off being officially on the streets by holing up in tiny motel rooms.

For many, things have gone beyond that. I found some stories on tent cities sometime last year. Just a simple search of the news finds stories about cities struggling to support these communities, like Sacramento does. Other cities try to crush the makeshift communities, like the "compassionate conservative" stronghold of Colorado Springs.

Meanwhile, smaller cities like Corvallis, Oregon are doing what they can but are forced to address the issues of safety and health.

Like I said, I've seen some of the Southern California ones and the damn things are depressing. Sadly, there is a reason they exist and more and more tent cities are popping up across this nation.
