Monopoly’s Hidden Maps Help World War II POWs Escape – ABC News

This is pretty cool. Apparently Monopoly board games were used to smuggle maps and escape materials to POWs held by the Nazis and Italians during WWII.

I have a history degree and I’ve studied the war a lot and I’ve never heard of this. Such an interesting story.

Sadly, you’d never get a multinational company to help a nation’s military like this in today’s world.

Right-Wing Hatemongering Fueled by Christianity? | | AlterNet

Frank Schaeffer points out the hypocrisy of right-wing “Christianity” behind the racist, fearful, and hate-filled movement against the President and common sense Americans in general.

In short, his argument is that sane Christians need to rescue their religion for the vindictive lovers of death and destruction before it’s too late for any decent person to be taken seriously for adhering to religion.

Milton Bradley sent home for season (and probably for good) – Big League Stew – MLB – Yahoo! Sports

This is about damn time.

I’ve taken my share of crap from non-Cubs fans for the signing of this jerk. Yeah, talking about you Marcos! Hopefully this is the end of Bradley’s career in Chicago.

Actually, scratch that. I hope the White Sox pick him up.

Incidentally, just finished watching the Cubbies pull a miracle out of the bat bag to avoid the sweep by the Cards. That was nice. But after dropping two to St. Louis, I think I’ve got to face reality and realize the chance of a postseason is pretty much shot. They had to win these games in particular to have a shot at catching up at least on the wild card leaders but to also pressure the Cardinals. Neither happened.

Bob Cesca’s Awesome Blog! Go!: Southern Pride

Bob Cesca points out a few good trends regarding the falling appeal of the GOP.

He also links to a quality Frank Rich opinion piece, but also points out the obvious problem in believing what people think versus what they feel:

The thing the Democrats should always bear in mind is the American people’s uncanny knack for shooting themselves in the foot. Americans will choose the wrong leaders for the wrong reasons in spite of themselves. They’ll vote for crazy Republicans if the crazy Republicans appear to be “stronger” than the other guys. And the consequences will be predictably tragic. It’s the Democrats’ game to lose.

Be happy you are on the right side of the argument, but be afraid that there is a deep well of racism, fear, and stupidity and the GOP knows damn well that this resource ain’t ever going away. Sadly, dumb, frightened bunnies keep giving these idiots election victories when they have no reason (in all that word’s forms) to win.
