Shifting identities: Hispanic or Latino?

I am sure many of you wonder about this and what is the appropriate term.

Here is the LA Times announcement referenced.

Me? You can’t go wrong using Latino/a around me. I have no use for the term Hispanic. Nixon first used the term and, well, if you think taking a term from a racist who came up with the divisive Southern Strategy is a good idea, then to hell with you too.

How you define yourself is an important as how your enemies do. Some folks want to move past labels and good for you if you do. But, like it or not, the world doesn’t work that way, and if you don’t have a name for what you are, someone will make the choice for you.

Hispanic is one of those names.

Felt compelled to find this today.

I usually do my basic patriotic duties: fly the flag on key dates, vote, watch the Super Bowl.

But this year the commercials include Jerry Seinfeld, an aborted fetus, and Dan the Racist Nebraskan. Plus what I feel is a very subpar performance by Matthew Broderick pimping Honda grocery getters as Ferris Bueller.

You know what? I’ve got other shit to do. Yeah, that’ll probably involve watching Caillou or something for five hours straight but I think I like my odds given what the alternative seems to be.
