The Average American Ate (Literally) A Ton This Year : The Salt : NPR
Wow, this is depressing. Apparently you – and me – and every other average American, literally ate about a ton of food last year.
Each.
I mean, we’ve been a bit on the poor side, but we still managed to eat.
So, just damn.

Neil Gaiman’s Journal: My New Year Wish
Great sentiments from a great man.
“I hope that in this year to come, you make mistakes.
Because if you are making mistakes, then you are making new things, trying new things, learning, living, pushing yourself, changing yourself, changing your world. You’re doing things you’ve never done before, and more importantly, you’re Doing Something.”
Homepage update
Finally, after something like four years, I am refreshing the main site template. Frankly, seeing as I’m not giddy with the blog template, I might morph some of it over here too. Or do something different. I hope.
In the meantime, wish me luck on fleshing out the template and converting the pages. Give it a look-see here and tell me what you think.
I mean, if: a) you are interested, and b) the comments work again.

Why the White South Is Still in Denial About Slavery | Tea Party and the Right | AlterNet
Seriously? F the South.
I have lived in Texas, worked in almost every southern state. They fly a flag celebrating treason, still call elderly black men “boy” and have taken a serious look at treating (mostly) undocumented brown folks into either felons or slave labor. Or both. And most of the latter has happened in earnest just this year in states like Georgia, Alabama, and North Carolina.
So, yeah, this article speaks to that syndrome. That sickness. That unspoken sin carried by anyone who still believes in racial hatred or just quietly lets in hang like an evil fog just outside their front doors.
