BBC News – Chernobyl nuclear plant shelter faces cash woes

It still amazes me how we humans have managed to create an actual dead zone on our world. Here’s a story on how the Russians are having troubles getting cash to create a better containment cap at Chernobyl.

Also in the article is an interview with a former resident who went back recently.

Also, a really freaky slideshow of the power plant itself. I’ve seen a lot of images from Pripyat but not anything like this.

Rafters Push For ‘Right To Float’ In Colorado : NPR

Stuff like this just pisses me off. Give the story a read/listen and see if you don’t get irate either.

In short, some a-hole from Texas buys up a bunch of land in Colorado adjoining a river.

Said river is used for rafting and recreation.

Said river and all rivers in Colorado are public entities. It is in the state constitution as such.

A-hole Texan claims the waterway abutting his property is his and that he can ban people from floating on it.

Case is – for some unknown reason – not thrown out on the grounds of stupidity and is pending.

Oh, in Texas, you can’t own the waterways, which apparently is why he came to Colorado. Apparently he thought, and he’s right, that money can break more laws in the Rockies than they can in Texas.

CBS Sunday Morning – Video Segments

It’s totally my fault, and actually not even that to a certain extent.

My Grandfather got me hooked on watching Sunday Morning on CBS back when Charles Kuralt hosted it. The stories were entertaining and light and you often learned stuff too.

So I’ve been watching it with Gabriel, who actually asks for it when he wakes up on Sundays. “Sun, Sun!” he screams until I put in on.

His favorite part, however, is at the end of the show when a moment of nature video is played, often involving some animals. CBS is really, really awful about hosting video from the show up but I just saw some of the last couple weeks of stuff we liked up and I figured I’d share. (Many have been moved/archived at YouTube over the years.)

Climate Change May Mean More Mexican Immigration: Scientific American

Republicans are usually really bad on cause-and-effect relations but they might want to pay attention to this. The more the climate becomes unstable, the more Mexicans are going to lose their jobs and farms. Which means even more will come to US looking for work as long as folks are willing to hire them.

Anyone willing to pass some immigration reform yet?

Also, more on how the Senate knows nothing about science.
