Since I’m on a cold weather posting spree, I’ll include this one on keeping your pets safe at this time of year.

RSA Animate – Changing Education Paradigms
Leslie clued me into this. Damn important thoughts given the challenge this nation has ahead of it. Or heck, the challenge of getting your own kid properly educated.
The Six Demandments of Train Track Design (With Sweet Plans!) | GeekDad | Wired.com

We picked Gabriel up some simple track and a small engine in Portland. He seems to want more. And if we get enough space, he’ll be getting more.
Here are some guidelines I plan to follow.
Why Do Dogs Eat Grass? | PetMD
Our poor pup occasionally gets a tummy ache and goes out to graze. Thankfully this article confirms what I’ve always thought about why he does it.
Fruit, Veggie, Cheese or Yogurt: Smart Snacks Make a Difference | GeekDad | Wired.com
I like this philosophy of only offering kids tasty, but healthy, options late in the day for snacks.
Then again, Gabriel isn’t often offered sweets or pastries and really, really like snacking on red pepper slices. So I’m kind of a target audience for this.
Dogs Likely Descended From Middle Eastern Wolf : NPR
Here’s an old-ish story I meant to link and forgot. It’s about the genetic makeup of dogs and where they originally came from.
Interesting stuff. We all like to know how we got here, even our puppies.
Caring for Pets Left Behind by the Rapture – BusinessWeek
Since I’m jaded, my main thought upon reading this article is “why didn’t *I* come up with this?”
That said, the guy seems legit in caring for animals, if not in believing Talibangelical paranoia.
Because, honestly, the world can get WAAAAAAAAAAAY worse than it is right now, even without conservative teenage anal sex, bombing brown people, and planting new nuclear plants in former Confederate states (yes, rednecks, Obama is actually prepping you twits for the next Three Mile Island, HA! HA! HA! HA!).
Sorry, just had to add a new conspiracy theory out there.
How to Raise Racist Kids | GeekDad | Wired.com
The title isn’t what you think. Seriously, give the article a read.
Granted, I’ve read NurtureShock and am a bit of a convert myself, but the core argument regarding race and children is that ignoring race is just as bad as teach kids to be lil’ klan kiddies.
Like with most things in life, you have to confront the issue and present all relevant sides to an argument. Yes, there are different races in our world. Everyone is raised or at least influenced a bit differently. But different doesn’t mean bad in most aspects.
People seem to want to have the easy way out. But folks who want it all the time really shouldn’t be parents. I hope to do a damn sight better than that with our little guy.
10 Things Parents Should Know About James Cameron’s Avatar | GeekDad | Wired.com

First off: LOVED this flick. Go see it.
For those with kids, read this. The violence level may be a bit much for some younguns.
The Next Generation of Geek: Teach a Kid to…
Wired and GeekDad in particular have had a few articles recently on getting your kids tech ready.
Check out how to teach a kid to program. A tad more advanced than what Gabriel needs to learn but still an article to keep around.
GeekDad carries a similar article. Also tips on getting your kids ready to be on the internet safely and responsibly.
