This isn’t about “honoring” the past–it’s about an inability to cope with the present.
Ta-Nehisi Coates on how – yes – the Confederacy was about slavery and any whitewashing of the past ignores both that truth and that much of the “honoring” of the Confederacy these days has more to do with the racism and fear of “others” in those suggesting that honoring treason is patriotic.
The Tea Bagger Traitors are moving to spread treason throughout our military.
In short, they want our troops to not follow the orders of a black president. That’s it in a nutshell.
If any other entity other than angry white racists were trying to subvert the chain and command system, it would be ruthlessly dealt with as a danger to our nation. Well, maybe not. The Talibangelicals have basically taken over the Air Force already I suppose.
This nation is screwed.
The danger of validating violent racist traitors is that eventually they take over a part of our national discourse. This is the problem with the right wing these days. They have ceded their discourse to those who hate, fear, and would destroy all of us in the quest for some mythical America that never existed. And hell, given our history, forcing it to exist would destroy everything America is.
It isn’t enough for moderates and liberals to try to fix this through laws, law enforcement, or just common decency. Conservatives need to clean up their damn mess. And quickly.

Lesson One in how to make your race irrelevant. First you get all up in a huff because the nation elected a black man as president. Then you reject filling out the census. This makes your regions less represented in the nation’s politics – hopefully losing Congressional seats as well as not gaining all the ones you are entitled to – and diverting funds from your communities, making them more backwards and obsolete than just your thought patterns.
Add to this the very successful campaign to get Latinos registered and thus overrepresented (thanks to your racist asses) and ta-da! now you don’t count as much.

I actually know the answer to that. There will ALWAYS be racists, be illiterate, backwards, hateful bastards. They breed in trailer parks. You can’t educate the little pricks fast enough to remove the taint.
But you CAN tell them they are wrong. You don’t have to treat them like they have an opinion worth validating. This ass clown should have been silenced immediately. The Sarah Palin’s or the world need to be told that they are wrong. Civilization cannot survive based on morons of that ilk. For our self-preservation, if not our dignity, these twits need removed from the discourse of our nation.
Sure, they can contribute – once they develop thoughts that don’t lead to hatred, division, fear, and death.
Thankfully, as I was typing this up, I watched a John Stewart clip on this. I feel better now.

Some good advice on confronting folks saying racist stuff, whether they mean to or not. Basically, try to take the high road and be smart about it.
Minuteman Militia racists are “shocked” when they call for their minions to come to the border “locked and loaded” and said racist mob shows up armed to the teeth.
Looks, it’s bad enough you are bigoted pricks who don’t trust the civilian and military to properly protect this nation. It is worse when you naively don’t believe your own press and are confused as to why the worst parts of our society listen to your hateful directives to the letter.
If you are going to be that stupid, be silent. Your words are going to get people killed.
Frank Rich points out that, if you look at things historically, the psychotic over-reaction of the Tea Baggers and their ilk has no comparison. Except for one. The last time conservatives went this nuts was during the Civil Rights Bill passage in the 1960s. So, it isn’t about “socialism” or “government takeover of, well, NOTHING” or any of their talking points. It’s about racism. Pure and simple.
But I imagine most of you already knew that.

When my dad got a night job at a Wal-Mart in Illinois, he introduced me to some of the racist propaganda masquerading as training videos. Granted, the message of one tape was for white stockboys not to call elderly black men as “boy” but it was more of a wink, wink, nod, nod “don’t do that in public” thing. I don’t have a copy of the tape but I’m sure it’s out on the Net somewhere.
Besides, Wal-Mart knows how to butter it’s bread. Cater to the racist NECKCAR fans and then buy out any competition in minority-majority areas to where folks HAVE to put up with their racist shit.
