Back…for now

Some twit totally infested the site with scripts and malware and I just got the all-clear to reactivate the site.

In the meantime, I realized that MoveableType no longer has a free offering so I am going to have to go to WordPress at some point.

Ah, well, progress.

It also turns out that I really have to get rid of some of the old image pages and such as the javascript in them is potentially capable of being flagged as malicious.

Well, at least I have some winter projects.

Recovery

So…got attacked by some asshats who injected a virus into the blogging system. Still in recovery mode so I have entries to fix, code to revamp, templates to try out.

Still alive, just taking some time to get back on my feet with the blog.

Incidentally, HostMonster’s tech support can kiss my ass. Useless. You definitely get what you pay for with them. I miss IonWeb.

Homepage update

Finally, after something like four years, I am refreshing the main site template. Frankly, seeing as I’m not giddy with the blog template, I might morph some of it over here too. Or do something different. I hope.

In the meantime, wish me luck on fleshing out the template and converting the pages. Give it a look-see here and tell me what you think.

I mean, if: a) you are interested, and b) the comments work again.

Migration Blues

Turns out my old stalwart hosting provider – Ion Web – is calling it quits in the coming weeks.

So I have to move everything over to a new host. The blog is going to be the issue, what with moving the database and hoping it all comes up. I may even try to mess with the actual webpages. Don’t hold your breath on that though.

What does this mean to you? Well, if you come here often, there may be an interruption. I am going to clear a bunch of tab entries in the coming days just to start fresh on this end but after that you’ll see a lull. Yeah, more so than usual.

Either way, wish me luck. I really don’t have time for this but change and poor timing are inevitable.

Catching up

You’d think being unemployed would give me all the time in the world to post.

Well, obviously it hasn’t.

Some of it is watching Gabriel all day, some is actually looking for work. Other time is spent (still) unpacking.

And, I guess, a lot of it has to do with depression. I don’t think I’m non-functional yet, nor is this a pity post. I am, however, noticing that it takes a lot more oomph to get me motivated these days past the things I need to be doing.

Gabriel and Mono are cared for, the errands get done. Nothing is going to pot except maybe my mind.

I don’t do resolutions. You have to want to get your shit in order EVERY day, not just when you’re loaded up on champagne and finger foods.

But I *am* going to have to get my ass in gear if I am going to have a shot of getting past this spot of trouble we’re in. Call it what you want, but I need to resolve – there’s that word after all – to do better at this.

Granted, posting random thoughts and links aren’t going to do it. But the very fact that I haven’t been doing that little is a pretty good sign that I’m in deeper than I want to admit.

Whew!

Back when I converted the blog database to MT 4, I ran the upgrade scripts on an old set of blog entries. Thus I lost the date/time stamps on everything from August 2007 to June 2008.

Sure, I could have just knocked out re-editing all those hundreds of entries, but where to find the time? Answer? There never was any time.

So, I finally did it. A few every odd day or so, plus a concentrated push during lunch breaks and conference calls over the past couple weeks and I finally knocked out the edits. It wasn’t hard, just time consuming. So they are back and searchable. Dead links and bad grammar untouched of course as I don’t do revisionist history unless I really, really screwed up and need to make amends and give a mea culpa.

Anyway, more entries for you to ignore.

Unsettled feeling

Tom called from someone’s cell apparently and let us know he and the rest of the unit had made it to Fort Hood this evening. As dumb luck would have it, Leslie and I went out for 10 minutes and missed his call. In any case, all is well for now.

I’m building a subsite called Galva Guard and will be putting up news stories and whatever images we receive from Tom or whoever submits really. This may or may not break my bandwidth and storage budget. We’ll just have to see I suppose.

I guess I’m feeling a bit out of sorts really. It isn’t right to watch your little brother getting prepared to go into a conflict area. Granted, he’s younger and definitely more fit than me at the moment and I have no doubt he is trained, and will continue to be trained, to do the best job possible. The problem is me being overprotective I suppose and its something I’m just going to have to deal with. Some days it just infuriates me that this is the situation we’re all in.

In any case, I’ll try to stay objective about the whole thing. Online anyway.
