What’s a bond, a Treasury, a T-bill? | Marketplace From American Public Media

Marketplace has been really good at explaining the economy lately in layman’s terms. Here is an explanation of some of the more safe and less volatile financial instruments you’ve heard a lot about recently.

For more like this and general economics news, read the Breakdown blog or try to listen to the various incarnations of the show. The local NPR plays it at 6:30 PM here instead of the better timed 5:30 I was used to in Vegas.

Pity.

Fancy a Pint? Brew Throughout the World

It turns out that once a national economy reaches a certain level of stability, the amount of beer drinking goes up.

Granted, we’re in a recession and even so-called stable economies have been knocked on their heels but the rule still applies.

What is even a bit more surprising is that once a nation gets a certain amount of wealth, they then turn from beer to higher prices spirits. Thus, this news that Scotch exports are up 22% since 2010 is actually not that much of a surprise.

I mean, *I* can’t afford the good stuff these days, but someone is.

GOP’s Gun Raffle In Giffords’ District Sparks Hot Debate

I often say that the modern Republicans are being led by cruel idiots. I get called out a lot on that. I am not saying every Republican voter is a bigot or a moron. That said, they sure do elect a lot of ’em.

Case in point per the poor leadership argument. The Pima County, AZ GOP is raffling off a gun. They’ve had the gun for awhile, even tried to raffle it off before but no one picked it up.

So they are trying it again.

No big deal. Folks have raffles for stuff all the time. Plus, these kinds of folks think it is great to bring weapons into the house of God, a place to worship their so-called Prince of Peace. Not Piece. Peace. Anyways….

Problem is, Pima County is where Representative Gabrielle Giffords has her Congressional seat. You know, the elected official some jackhole tried to assassinate last year. By using a Glock. A Glock, incidentally, is the type of pistol being auctioned by the Pima County GOP.

It’s tasteless to try to profit from this. End of story. Someone can donate a howitzer for all I care but not this. Then again, these folks like money more than they do people. Or respect. Or decency.

And you wonder why I won’t vote for them. You know, aside from them wanting to deport me solely based on my genetic makeup.

9/11 Coloring Book: Is it Appropriate for Kids? – Parenting.com

Conservatives only like education as a means to brainwash children. Case in point? A 9/11 coloring book that promotes lies and tries to make the reader hate all Muslims.

Hell, I’ve said it before, if going to a strip joint and drinking beer the night before hijacking a plane makes you a Muslim, then that’s probably not apparent to most Muslims who have been doing a whole lot more pious things.

Apparently that makes blowing up a federal day care and trying to assassinate a member of Congress the hallmarks of a good, white Christian boy.

Nutjobs are nutjobs. The end. Trying to make others hate people for the color of their skin or who they worship is its own sin. Probably a venal Lake o’ Fire type sin. At least I would hope some deity would see it that way.

As for trying to sell this bullshit to children? That’s just pure evil.

Norman Rockwell painting sends rare White House message on race

Forgotten how filthy some of our fellow Americans are? First, ask yourself why this is even an issue. Seriously, why make political hay out of something like this. Then read some of the comments. Despicable creatures.

Then read some backstory on the painting itself. Just reminds me I need to read/re-read more Steinbeck. We need a modern version of him to tell the stories of folks being kicked by the powerful in this day and age.
