Bringing both sides for conservation | Marketplace From American Public Media

So, an energy company advises their customers on how they can conserver energy and conservatives angrily ramp UP their energy usage in protest.

The discussion then turns to how best to appeal to conservatives.

Which is BS.

A couple thoughts here.

1. Teddy Roosevelt was a conservative AND a conservationism. He was also pretty progressive and helped build our national park system.

2. Republicans today only see national parks as a place to take their assault rifles.

3. The word “conservative” and “conservation” come from the same source. At least, in the traditional sense. You can’t say they mean the same thing today.

4. With their love of oil companies, and hate of the environment, and dismissal of things like “peak oil” and “climate change”, how the hell do you plan to appeal to folks that aren’t even reading the same book, much less the same page as the rest of us?

5. I imagine some of these conservatives are full-on Rapture Bunnies that think that if we destroy the Earth, we’ll MAKE God prepare the End Times. Or some crap like that.

In short, these aren’t rational people. Anyone who wants to run up a light bill as a political statement is an idiot. Anyone who thinks oil companies are their pals and isn’t a board member on one, is a fool.

I appreciate the view that everyone should conserve, but some folks are just too into their kool-aid cups to be spoken to on this issue. Trust me, it ain’t the marketing folk’s fault.

Christopher Nolan: The Movies. The Memories. Part 4: Gary Oldman on Batman Begins

This is a damn cool interview with Gary Oldman on his thoughts on director Christopher Nolan. It’s part of a series of interviews with folks who have worked with him. Nolan, that is.

I forget how many of his films I actually do enjoy. Nolan, that is, but I could go days talking about Gary Oldman flicks too. I look forward to the rest of the series, but this one is, thus far, the best.

Evil Communist Youths Refuse To Let Financial Columnist Pay For Lemonade

A somewhat tongue-in-cheek headline from Wonkette on a story I’ve been following the past week. First off, the sarcasm.

Now the actual odious story where the author is positively giddy about yelling out of her chauffered car at three little girls.

She even has at least one supporter, one very quick to inject some racism into the argument. Idiot.

As for the rest of the internet, there’s a fairly uniform attack on the “compassionate” conservative financial nitwit.

I love this one, that calls the article a breathtakingly moronic diatribe, which really is the best explanation I’ve read.

And here’s another good one.

This one is great the comments.

I like this commentary which accurately points out that Savage’s column – and gleeful anger – is given out for free as well.

I’d take the lemonade.

Here’s my favorite comment from the above Wonkette article:

“These are suburban kids – they have no idea that anything costs money. They’ve had the welfare of their stable, 2 income households their whole lives. Plus, that lemonade (made with filtered water, organic lemons and raw turbinado sugar in a reusable no bad plastic cup) would probably cost $6 a glass if they ran the numbers.

Now, find the kids in a shitty apartment complex running a drink operation, and they’ll know the cost (35 cents for a packet of “grape drink” mix, diluted twice the suggested amount with water from a hose and a dollar or so to the kid who swiped his mom’s collection of plastic bar cups). Then add a dumbass adult surcharge on top to get up to a buck or two. 5 bucks if they add some codeine syrup. These are the real entrepeneurs of America, people. Kids who know exactly how fucked the world is and take it on its own terms.”
