The First Church of Robotics – Jaron Lanier

Lanier is normally a really weird boy but he is dead on in this critique over how we are developing robotics.

Robots, droids, whatever are tools. They may evolve past that someday but we may not be responsible for that. They aren’t toys, nor should they be dumbed down so people think they are cute. That should be a marketing decision, not a design one.

Look Sir, droids!

Two stories this week concerning our increasingly mechanized military.

The first one involves self-driving supply trucks that allow the humans riding in it to spend their time looking for roadside bombs.

Personally, I’d reverse the roles but it’s progress I guess.

Next story is a tad scarier. The Brits have basically built a Cylon Raider which they call the Taranis. Read up on it here.

So, um, Skynet may not have been so fictional, eh?
