This article is pretty instructive in both how bad the global economy has gotten and in how good our tools for analyzing such things beyond what the Dow is at have gotten.
Paul Begala: Mr. Cheney, You Did Not Keep Us Safe
I’ve been rough on Paul Begala. Not that he cares, but I do.
Prior to becoming a raging Clintonite, he used to make a lot of sense. His pal James Carville didn’t but Jimmy has always been more about finding the cogent needle in the haystack of madness he unleashes. Basically, Jimmy is a lost cause trying to ass kiss his way back into relevancy. Begala is the sane component of that duo.
So, here is his detailed, coherent, and rational argument against the madness of Dick Cheney.
Honestly, anyone taking the side of Dick in this argument, should probably be taken out back, waterboarded 183 times, and then asked again what they think. I imagine these chickenhawks might be changing their minds when faced with reality.
Explorer-Scouts Train in Post-9/11 Law Enforcement Methods – NYTimes.com
You know, when deciding whether or not to have my son join the Boy Scouts later in life, I’m going to have a few things on my checklist.
First, are they still Talibangelical enablers?
Second, do they support bigotry and exclusion when it comes to membership?
And a new third: will they try to train my son to be some kind of neo-con deathwatch stormtrooper?
Seriously, what the hell is wrong with these people?
Houston – Hair Balls – Why I’d Sleep With The PC Guy Over That Mac Guy Asshole
I am not saying *I* would sleep with either character, but I love the argument made by the author of this article on how the PC always ends up looking like the nicer person compared to the smarmy Mac guy. Which if you are Apple and already have the jerkwad pseudo-artistic crowd locked down, why are you intentionally pissing off people to attempt to gain market share?
For one night, Jayson Werth goes klepto on the basepaths – Big League Stew – MLB – Yahoo! Sports
I only saw the highlights of this, but a pretty amazing feat nonetheless. Check out the story and video.
In Moscow, an Attempt to Wed Pushes Gay Rights – NYTimes.com
Rethug Conservatives love the Putin Russia.
Don’t believe me?
They love a police state under the rule of an all powerful military and intelligence community.
They love bombing anyone they want with impunity (re: Chechnya, Georgia, etc.).
They love having a big energy conglomerate (i.e. Gazprom) work without any government restrictions and constantly padding politico’s pockets and having it’s own small army. Imagine Exxon with Blackwater/Xe as it’s strong arm.
They love bigotry, especially government sanctioned homophobia. The linked article focuses on a couple that wanted to get married and were denied, just like Republicans get wet about whenever they think about it happening here in America.
So, sure, some Dems would like the US to be a tad more socialist. Not the president, but they are right about some liberal types.
However, it seems the conservatives in our nation would love to fall over themselves to emulate post-Soviet Russia ala Putin style. It completely seems to be right up their alley.
Catholic political divide over Obama at Notre Dame : NPR
Once again, more proof on why I’m not a practicing Catholic.
If I’m supposed to accept that the bigotry of Lil’ Miss Prejean-dice is an “opinion” instead of a bigoted screed, then how in the hell can her backers who play with overt racism reject the President of the United States as a valid speaker at Notre Dame?
They don’t like his policies, that’s for sure. But given that they were cool with Bush’s torture and Reagan’s hatred of the poor, and Clinton’s deceptive marital status, there really is only one valid reason to balk at Obama’s visit to their school to deliver a commencement address, and it isn’t his stance on abortion.
There’s some vile discussion of the “controversy” here. The comments and views of Gary Bauer and Cesar Condi and Steve Steckler are particularly odious.
Arizona State is refusing to grant President Obama an honorary degree as he speaks there tonight. Given that Arizona is a complete and utter conservative haven for dipshits (re: Goldwater, McCain, Kyl, Arpaio, and Simcox, et al), their particular brand of bigotry isn’t really a surprise. With that said, I present – via the Daily Show – the idiots that will soon be inflicted upon us that will have degrees from Arizona State that they “earned”.
EDIT: Well, *that* video got well and truly scrubbed from the internet. Pity. Calling ASU the “Harvard of Date Rape” really told the story.
Liberal – Conservapedia
Once you get past the bullshit bias in the write-up, this is a very common-sense and conventional definition of what being a liberal is.
That said, does ANYONE truly know what being a conservative means today?
Also, how pathetic do you have to be to create your own version of an encyclopedia because reality has proven you wrong at every turn?
Political Irony › The Irony of Blowback
This is a pretty good read on the value of at least trying to foresee the unintended consequences of your actions. You know, maybe if Bush had surrounded himself with non-Yes men, he might not have screwed our country up as bad as he did.
Then again, I’m pretty sure that was inevitable.
A dweeb’s debate: 10 Reasons ‘Star Wars’ is better than ‘Star Trek’ – Project Mayhem
There’s a lot of chatter about Star Trek lately. And that’s fine; more power to them.
That said, let’s make sure we know what sci-fi franchise is on town and, more importantly, why it is the superior piece of the genre.
