There are, like, other countries out there

We get very focused on what happens within our borders, enough so we forget the rest of the world is out there.

So, to shine a little flashlight at the rest of the planet, let's see how they do presidential elections.

Turkey is caught in a situation where they are in danger of losing their democracy rather than let Islamic fundamentalists take over their country.

Meanwhile, the only candidate there has withdrawn but Islamic politicians are planning to change their process of electing their president from a parliamentary vote to a general election. Sounds like they are advocating democracy, but this is more of a way to get their religious mobs to vote and discourage others from doing so.

France has a new president, but this doesn't help Turkey either.

That said, Sarkozy will at least be more willing to talk to the US. Then again, he's been equated to a Nazi so that doesn't say much for what people think of us overseas.

Two Iraq related notes. Kansas is having problems getting help to their tornado-striken citizens because much of the gear is in Iraq. Also, religious extremists are forcing women to wear head scarves before dealing with them. So much for our democracy experiment.

Plus, we're advocating heroin production in Afghanistan. Joy.
